🦃This Thanksgiving, we`re thankful for the 58th anniversary for New York City`s very first historic district! Brooklyn Heights Historic District was designated on November 23, 1965.
From the 1965 Landmarks Preservation Commission`s designation report:
“The architecture of the Heights is a remarkable example of stylistic development, rarely found in any American City.
Otis Pratt Pearsall, Co-Chairman of the Historic Preservation Committee of the Brooklyn Heights Association testified, "Scattered landmarks of great historical or architectural value must certainly be preserved. But individual monuments cannot convey the character and atmosphere of the City as it was. This can only be achieved through dense groupings of homogeneous structures which retain in high degree the integrity of their original architecture.
From the totality of all this, the interesting old buildings arranged on irregular streets, with unexpected vistas, emanates an appearance and even more a spirit and character of Old New York which no single part thereof, and certainly no individual Landmark, could possibly provide. It is this `collective emanation` which distinguishes an Historic District, and particularly Brooklyn Heights, from a Landmark and gives it a unique aesthetic and historical value."

🕊️There`s a special lady hanging out in the back office of @jao_brand !
Meet Gertie, a white dove who landed on Jao Social Club`s doorstep in need of help one day. Owner Gale brought her in, and she has now become a friend of her`s and the shop`s.
Gertie enjoys hanging out in the back of the store, whether in her cage or perched upon other furniture. She especially likes to sit on Gale’s finger.
To be featured, your animal must be photographed in our district and mention a beloved local business.

🎉Celebrating a business birthday this #sidestreetsaturday
🎂Two for the Pot is celebrating its 50th anniversary!
John McGill, owner of Two for the Pot, is gearing up to officially re-open his beloved tea and coffee shop to the public after a stretch of limited hours. John first opened his shop a few blocks away in 1973 and moved to 200 Clinton Street near Atlantic Avenue in 1982.
John has stayed in the neighborhood for the past 50 years because of his loyal, multigenerational clientele, which he describes as “devoted.” He characterized the Atlantic Avenue community as a “small town within the city” and that there is “no reason to go anywhere else.”
John’s shop is filled with containers, notes, and signage all hand-written in his remarkable penmanship. The business evolved and grew over the years: in the early days, he strictly sold coffee and tea. Today, Two for the Pot offers over 100 culinary organic herbs and spices, and one of the largest selections of loose leaf teas in New York City. Come visit soon!

This #sidestreetsaturday, we are taking a look back to an old community favorite and piece of Native American history.
🎶Hank`s Saloon was a popular hony-tonk and watering hole for the Boerum Hill community since 2000. Before Hank`s, the bar was called The Doray Tavern. It was a popular spot for Mohawk Ironworkers, who were instrumental in building many of New York`s iconic buildings and bridges in the 20th century.
🔒Hank`s remains closed for now, but BID staff was lucky enough to take a peek inside the old saloon. Most of its details are still present!
➡️Swipe right to see pictures of the building throughout phases of its life.
🍻Share your memories of Hank`s with us in the comments!
